How far have computers come to being closer to humans?
Not far, really, it seems.
Sure.. computers are mastering some of our hobbies (Checkers, Chess ,and now Jeopardy- through the use of site statistics/future-move-metrics) but they're not clever enough yet to handle other human tasks, let alone in tandem.
They're winning at rule-based systems. They know the rules, and the rules don't change (do they?), during the game.
Brian Christian was an author featured on 8-March on the Daily show, who discussed what its like during a Turing contest (computer programs attempt to be human, humans try to both prove themselves as humans or computers, via chat/messaging interfaces)
I enjoyed hearing more on the AI topic, since IBM's "Watson" ($3M) computer, featured on NOVA, did just win on Jeopardy recently.
One possible lateral move noted for the Watson computer is akin to a Doctor's companion, for sifting through thousands of diagnosis and offering a top-ten solution list from what medical parameters/criterion are in scope. Maybe it can even work for cars, too.
But it would be very niche-oriented. Having too many "departments" to support would fracture its logic and site heuristics/ algorithms, rendering a low confidence level in its results.
I do wonder what the hypothetical future winning AI programming language might be, or if its even here/invented as of yet. (C# anyone, or pascal?)
I don't believe humans are simply digital-thinkers (0's and 1's);
I wonder if an AI may need the extra quirks of quantum computing to crack our brains' mysteries, or will "Watson"'s approach actually be the new pillar for human understanding?
For now, some may answer this with a jeopardy-style answer: "What is... wishful thinking?"

iPhone Coolness
I'm a developer. I have an iPhone. And I love trying out apps that tests the capacity of what the iPhone can really do. But, I've got a resource problem.. I'm running out of room and I don't
really even use the phone for music/movies. I do use the RetroRecorder app I purchased from iTunes alot to record class sessions, so I need to keep things in check so I don't miss out on a recording.
I had already jailbroken my iPhone (that's another story there) some time ago, and recently became aware that the phone uses a Linux OS distribution of 'Darwin'. When you jailbreak an iPhone, you usually get a software app called "Cydia" which allows you to download additional non-Apple "approved" software. In my case, I needed a few key "nix" apps: a 'Terminal' app (for scripting in the environment; I later chose to use a term app from my PC and SSH into the phone), SSH handling, and something else but I can't think of it because my younger son is presently
stuck on my desk crying in my ear. :| Ok. Crisis adverted.
The other night I spent about an hour customizing a script that would give me a rundown of all the apps I am using, how much space they're taking up and, technically where they reside, since the directory structure is a little ambiguous.. I don't generally write scripts other than in ksh shell or perl, so I was lucky to find a couple of code samples that contained the missing links I needed this project to work.
The first that is in theory, simple, but frustrating since different OS's imply a specific format for it to work properly:

(I was missing the ";" and do on same line; I was placeing the do below the for)
The other was a command is how to find disk usage against a directory:
du -sk {directory}
And I was off. I coded for about an hour; half of the time was spent tweaking the report to get the details and layout I wanted.
For reference, the applications' data is stored inside individual applications' tokenized
folders in a "base" direc
/private/var/mobile/Applications/
For example, "Darts" was installed with a token/serialization of
"9AE277A5-737F-422E-9AF3-7B88136F1C5F".
This type of token is used as the app's primary folder name in the base path.
Inside this folder is "Darts.app" which confirms the identity of the app therein.
So in full,
"/private/var/mobile/Applications/9AE277A5-737F-422E-9AF3-7B88136F1C5F/Darts.app"
pretty much tells you all you need to know.
The first thing I did was to process all ".app" files with tokens in a list, sort the list
by the app name (otherwise it would be in the order of install, or via tokens) and then
process the list against the base path the du command against the app's token directory.
The listing also includes a status code after the token column; a zero means the du command was successful, while a nonzero had some type of error (usually, with file permissions).

Thats the bulk of it. Maybe later I'll throw in some additonal code for command line
switches for alternate sort options and whatnot but for now it is good enough;
I can at least track down some apps that might be too large for me to want to keep

really even use the phone for music/movies. I do use the RetroRecorder app I purchased from iTunes alot to record class sessions, so I need to keep things in check so I don't miss out on a recording.
I had already jailbroken my iPhone (that's another story there) some time ago, and recently became aware that the phone uses a Linux OS distribution of 'Darwin'. When you jailbreak an iPhone, you usually get a software app called "Cydia" which allows you to download additional non-Apple "approved" software. In my case, I needed a few key "nix" apps: a 'Terminal' app (for scripting in the environment; I later chose to use a term app from my PC and SSH into the phone), SSH handling, and something else but I can't think of it because my younger son is presently
stuck on my desk crying in my ear. :| Ok. Crisis adverted.
The other night I spent about an hour customizing a script that would give me a rundown of all the apps I am using, how much space they're taking up and, technically where they reside, since the directory structure is a little ambiguous.. I don't generally write scripts other than in ksh shell or perl, so I was lucky to find a couple of code samples that contained the missing links I needed this project to work.
The first that is in theory, simple, but frustrating since different OS's imply a specific format for it to work properly:

(I was missing the ";" and do on same line; I was placeing the do below the for)
The other was a command is how to find disk usage against a directory:
du -sk {directory}
And I was off. I coded for about an hour; half of the time was spent tweaking the report to get the details and layout I wanted.
For reference, the applications' data is stored inside individual applications' tokenized
folders in a "base" direc
/private/var/mobile/Applications/
For example, "Darts" was installed with a token/serialization of
"9AE277A5-737F-422E-9AF3-7B88136F1C5F".
This type of token is used as the app's primary folder name in the base path.
Inside this folder is "Darts.app" which confirms the identity of the app therein.
So in full,
"/private/var/mobile/Applications/9AE277A5-737F-422E-9AF3-7B88136F1C5F/Darts.app"
pretty much tells you all you need to know.
The first thing I did was to process all ".app" files with tokens in a list, sort the list
by the app name (otherwise it would be in the order of install, or via tokens) and then
process the list against the base path the du command against the app's token directory.
The listing also includes a status code after the token column; a zero means the du command was successful, while a nonzero had some type of error (usually, with file permissions).
Here's the final code:

WR104 - Our Very Own Personal Death Star?
This afternoon, I watched an amazing show (DVR'd from History Channel)
titled "The Universe: Death Stars". (1)
Sure... we, as a civilization could go out at any moment by way of the dinosaurs..
(Think: movie Armageddon with Bruce Willis [2])
Then again, there's always GRB (Gamma Ray Burst) pulsar radiation that could,
at minimum, zap our ozone and wipe us out the slow way through the food
chain, or obliterate our planet if close enough, just like Star Wars's Death Star. (3)
I learned that the GRB is only released if there is a rotational
influence on the Pulsar.. So if its not spinning fast, when it implodes,
GRB is very unlikely.. (1)
So slower is better - safety-wise.
Enter "MSPs" (Millisecond Pulsars - pulsars that rotate once every 10
milliseconds or faster): They, then, are a real threat out there.
IE, One pulsar, JI903+0327, rotates once every 2.15 milliseconds,
and is one of the faster-spinning among the known MSPs. (4)
The fastest? One of them is PSR J1748-2446ad, in star cluster called Terzan 5,
(28,000 light-years from us) in the constellation Sagittarius.
This "...pulsar is spinning 716 times per second, or at 716 Hertz (Hz), readily
beating the previous record of 642 Hz from a pulsar discovered in 1982.
For reference, the fastest speeds of common kitchen blenders are 250-500 Hz."

"...One death star, named WR104 [Wolf-Rayet], lurks 8,000 light-years from Earth and
some believe its GRB arrow is aimed directly at us.." (6,7)
Check out that animated spinning spiral at discovermagazine.com; that is nearly straight
on to our view (per article, with a possible canting factor of 0-16 degrees), which signifies
that it is pointed nearly straight at us.
But not to panic (for now).. According to the show, we still have about 100,000 years
to worry about this Pulsar. But, granted, that is only one of the many that we know about.
What about the ones we haven't detected yet? Kind of a scary thought. As mentioned in
the show, they are literally "Ticking Time Bombs."
We're all going to die eventually, but man.. what a way to go.. :|
